An bhfaca Tú Mo Shéamaisín

Amhrán na Seachtaine – Song of the Week

“An bhFaca Tú Mo Shéamaisín”

This lovely traditional song is sung by a mother whose young son – “mhaicín óg” is starting school. You will find many versions and recordings of this song. Sean Nós singer Joe Heaney can be heard singing it on Cartllann Seosaimh Uí hÉanaí – the Joe Heaney Archive and The Cassidys  – Na Casaidigh released a version of their self-titled album in 1980. It’s a popular children’s song and is often taught in school and during summer Gaeltacht courses.

Below are two versions and a breakdown of the song by both Orla Ní Fhinneadha and Sibéal Ní Casaide on Cúla 4 Ar Scoil, TG4 the Irish Language Television Station.

An bhfaca tú mo Shéamuisín?

An bhfaca tú mo Shéamuisín?
Mo stóirín óg, mo bhuachaillín.
An bhfaca tú mo Shéamuisín?
Is é ‘gabháil síos an bóthar.

Níl bróg ar bith ar a dhá choisín.
Ar a dhá choisín, ar a dhá choisín.
Níl bróg ar bith ar a dhá choisín.
Níl caipín air ná clóca.

Ag dul ar scoil tá Séamuisín
Mo stóirín óg, mo bhuachaillín
Ag dul ar scoil tá Séamuisín
‘S a leabharín buí sa phóca.

Ar a dhroim tá máilín beag
Tá máilín beag, tá máilín beag
Ar a dhroim tá máilín beag
‘S a lóinsín ann is dócha.

Do rugadh é i Móin a Lín
Ag bun an chnoic i nead éinín
Do rugadh é i Móin a Lín
In aice le Bun Dóite.

Ó grá mo chroí mo Shéamuisín
Mo stóirín óg, mo bhuachaillín.
Ó grá mo chroí mo Shéamuisín
Ar maidin is tráthnóna.

Have you see my Séamaisín,
My little love, my little boy
Have you see my Séamaisín,
Going down the road.

He has no shoes on his two feet,
On his two feet,on his two feet,
He has no shoes on his two feet,
He wears no cap or cloak.

Hé going to school, my Séamaisín,
My little love, my little boy,
Hé going to school, my Séamaisín,
WHis little yellow book in his pocket.

On his back is a little bag,
there’s a little bag, there’s a little bag,
On his back is a little bag,
With his lunch inside I sppose.

He was born in Móin a Lín
At the bottom of the hill in a little bird nest
He was born in Móin a Lín
Near to Bun Dóite.

The love of my heart is my little Jimmy
My little love, my little boy.
The love of my heart is my little Jimmy
From morning till night.
