Teastas Eorpach na Gaeilge (TEG), run by the Centre for Irish Language at Maynooth University, is the only official certification system for adult learners of Irish. It offers five graded proficiency levels, broadly modeled on the CEFR guidelines, though not formally aligned. Each level outlines the language skills expected of learners and helps individuals gauge their current ability and identify areas for improvement.
TEG also provides guidance on the recommended amount of study time needed before attempting each exam. Learners are encouraged to engage with Irish as much as possible—through classes, conversation groups, independent study, media, and everyday use—to build proficiency.
